Dankeschӧn!
I had a wonderful six months with this Residency. It is such a beautiful concept and in its nature just generous, non-judgemental and never ending.
Hence I am very pleased to hand the baton to Marion Piper as the next and eighth Reside Resident for the coming six months.
Picture
I am wishing her a brilliant residency, hoping she can use its conditions in whatever way she truly wants to. Looking at Marion’s work, website and blogs I think the Reside Residency might just be the right place and time for her.

PENULTIMATE BLOG

Six months are nearly over and I really lived the Reside residency rather than writing about it. Its conditions supported me in my then still new local church tower studio and allotment.
But this residency also assisted me in making virtual connections, like twitter and most recently on facebook.

The Reside blog was a wonderful new space in which to position images of my realities.
Unfortunately I am quite slow and it was  too short a time for me to engage meaningfully with peoples responses.

I've really enjoyed being part of this platform, figuring and trying things out and articulating my ideas.

I feel when the body is bound by time and place the soul can be free too.

I announce the next Reside Residency artist this Thursday here and on twitter when I publish my final post!

Obscure Secure

Soon this residency will come to an end.
Six months have gone quickly.
I haven't even mentioned Obscure Secure at Reside.

Obscure Secure
has been brewing slowly and deeply. For the past 18 month I have been meeting with Hayley Field and Jacqueline  Utley, two painters. Through a process of exploration and research, we have selected work from from the Ipswich Borough Council collection and created new work in response.

One of our aims is to uncover work from the collection of twentieth century women’s art
from the Ipswich Borough Council and exhibit it together with our paintings. This will happen from  6 September 2014 until 18 January 2015. In tandem with the show there will also be a series of talks at  Wolsey Art Gallery.

Christchurch Mansion, Soane Street
Ipswich, IP4 2BE

Obscure Secure title is taken from The Hawstead Panels, probably painted by Lady Drury, c.1610

This morning:  Images from our allotment and snapshots from the studio.

The plot has transformed since my posting of photos in February.
I could not think of a better metaphor for what has been happening since I started the reside residency.
The journey within 'my room' has been absolutely amazing.
Although I have not shared much of this here, I can honestly say that the very virtual presence of the reside residency alone has shaped and supported all of my moves between people, painting, twitterland, home, teaching, Ipswich, Manchester and London.

The existence of reside space enables me to connect to things and people within 'my room' in a certain kind of way.
It beautifully assists an internal process, negotiates a space and position in 'my room' which seems to have let things grow naturally.

A few weeks ago I carefully looked at the reside blogs by Karl, Corinna, Susan, Anthony, Michaela and Bridget
. I can't believe mine is soon coming to an end. Not quite yet, there are one or two things I am hoping to include in  'my room' before I leave!

This large drawing/collage I unrolled and put up this week in my studio to see what  I made 13 years ago whilst liveing on the island of Ruegen in Germany.
Pondering over how it relates to my current work.

Paint Club East Symposium June 21

6/6/2014

Picture
Paintclubeast
presents this symposium led by Dr Sunil Manghani, Reader in Critical and Cultural Theory at Winchester School of Art.

With the advent of new narratives of protest, social networks and community-engagement, the "social" and the "political" in art has been back in the spotlight.
What does this mean for the painter?

What is the " commitment" of/to painting, as an aesthetic and/or ethical/political practice?

Dr Manghani will be joined by 5 artists who will draw upon their own practices in exploring and interrogating the subject:

David Mabb
Dr Catherine Ferguson
Jeffrey Dennis
Emma Talbot
Rebecca Fortnum

The aim of paintclubeast is to support the professional development of painters in the UK’s Eastern region by enabling critical debate about contemporary painting.
This is achieved through a programme of talks by leading international/national painters and also by discussion held in studios and other venues.

Discover Suffolk  Walk

27/5/2014

A week a go I was right in the middle of the Discover Suffolk Challenge Walk. All in all we walked 95 miles over 6 days in the borderland between Norfolk and Suffolk.
Treading on local ground will feed my work in the studio.

Saturday 17 May

Day 1 of the 2014 Challenge Walk happened to be the hottest day of the year so far in Suffolk! We explored the broad, wide expanse of the Waveney Valley past lakes, marshes, broads and decoys. We started at Fritton Lake, passing through the historic Somerleyton Estate and busy Oulton Broad to end our day at Suffolk Wildlife Trust Carlton Marshes.

Sunday 18 May

Day 2 of the Challenge Walk headed west from Suffolk Wildlife Trust Carlton Marshes to follow The Angles Way alongside the River Waveney. We paused at the market town of Beccles before continuing through gently rolling landscape to our day’s end in Bungay.
Monday 19 May

Day 3 we skirted the region known as The Saints, an area of open commons, myths and legends. We followed the meandering Angles Way, criss-crossing the border of Suffolk and Norfolk, to walk over Outney Common, past a working mill and a hall, and the remnants of a priory.
Tuesday 20 May

Day 4, a day of two halves. The morning’s walk was in Suffolk, exploring the Waveney Valley to the village of Hoxne. In the afternoon we passed into Norfolk following The Angles Way through farmland to the market town of Diss and its Mere.

Wednesday 21 May

Day 5 we discovered the source of two rivers: the Waveney and the Little Ouse. In the land of the fen raft spider, we left the Waveney Valley and entered the valley of the Little Ouse. We ended our day in the Brecks, an area famous for lines of pine trees, dense forests and wild, open heathland.
Thursday 22 May

Our final day followed ancient ways through some of the best landscape in Suffolk. From the heathlands and warrens of Knettishall, we followed Britain’s oldest road, The Icknield Way, past historic Euston Hall into The King’s Forest. We ended our final day at the Elveden Estate with prizes and a celebratory cream tea!

For more (professional) brilliant photos please see www.flickr.com/photos/discoversuffolk

A big thank you to all Challenge Walkers who made it into such a delightful pilgrimage!
Full of both, silences and great chats!

But a very special 'Cheers' to Jackie Gillis and David Falk for planning the Challenge walk, heading the way and making sure nobody got left behind!

Thanks to Stevie Wright of The Broads Authority who introduced us on Day 1 to the Broads.
On Day 2 The Suffolk Wildlife Trust volunteers George Batchelor and Jim waited for us in the middle of nowhere with a beautiful live Raft Fen spider (in a jar on a table) and maps. Along the shores of the Waveney we were met by Alan Wheeler, the curator of Beccles Museum. He introduced us to Beccles town and Beccles Museum.

On Day 3 we met a lovely woodcutting farm worker (whose name remains a mystery) telling us about the family on the farm we were passing through.

Day 4 introduced us to Deborah Key, Education Officer Suffolk Wildlife Trust, who gave as a good idea about their commitment and projects. And Dr. Helen Smith must be  the most inspiring and passionate speaker about her work with Fen Raft Spiders!
See her website for more details.

Day 6 we listened to Sam Gray, Ranger, Suffolk Wildlife Trust, talking to us about the ancient land we were standing on! We met Andrew Blenkiron, Estate Manager, and Edward, Archivist, introducing us to the management and history of Euston Estate. Later in the day, Vicky Tustian from the Forestry Commision talked about the management of woodland on Elveden grounds; Frances Armstrong, Market Manager, and Bridget Warren, Land Agent, gave us new insights into how the huge Elveden Estate moved in to the 21st century!
Much appreciated knowledge and conversations were generated through all of  their expertise and presence! Thank you!

There are a few days left of the Suffolk Walking Festival, finishes on June 1st!

See you next year?

A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM

13/5/2014

I am very excited about sharing A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM with paintings by Karl Bielik, Valerie Brennan, Sarah Mc Nulty, Sophie Rees, Melanie Russel and Sabine Tress.

TWITTER introduced me to the painterly paintings by Karl, Valerie and Sophie.
I am thrilled to show again with Sarah whose work sat beautifully at studio 1.1 in London.
I am also glad Matthew introduced me to Sabine's work, who I hope to meet not before too long.

One dream come true.

A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM

@ Bankley Studios & Gallery

Private View 15th May
/ 18.00 - 21.00

Continues every Saturday / 12.30 - 17.30
17th May - 7th June

"Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?"

Edgar Allan Poe

The exhibition takes its title from a work by Sabine Tress, ‘A dream within a dream’, 2014. The Edgar Allan Poe poem which it shares the same name with is a poem about trying to  distinguish between reality and fantasy.

In a similar way to dreaming, the activity of abstract painting often treads the line between reality and fantasy, sometimes it is hard to separate the two from each other. The unconscious state  of dreaming offers us access to different memories and ideas, whilst in painting we can often  look back at created paintings and realise that something has been included in the work from  a previous memory.

The fully immersive activity of creating an abstract painting, with the full involvement, and the enjoyment of the process can create a kind of flow. This cognitive flow is a well accepted an idea proposed by  Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.

Cognitive flow suggests that some activities creates an energized focus, and results in all your attention being put into the task at hand with no more attention being left for anything else.  There is a merging of action and awareness as well as improvement of performance which results in a intrinsically rewarding experience.

The focus of flow can offer clear goals and direction which in turn offers great feedback, giving the painter the feeling that their actions matter and have a real effect on the painting and world.

A Dream within a Dream continues a thread of Pluspace exhibitions, such as Painted Thought (2014), Without an Edge there is no Middle (2013), Form / Function (2013) and Meditations (2013), that examines contemporary painting.

CLAUDIA BÖSE,  a painter based in Ipswich, Suffolk.

I construct my paintings through process, led by daily life, history and nature. I hope my ongoing engagement with light, colour and forms creates a new perception.

I am inspired and guided by the painterly process and its relation to abstraction; the way I handle paint invites an audience to consider my work without prejudice.
Decisions about when and how I use paint are also strongly guided by my empathy for work which has been created by other women painters.

I am drawn to regions which could be described as, geographical and psychological borderlands, especially those which have been interpreted throughout history by artists and writers.

Recently I began working in a new studio based high in the church tower of a modernist church in Ipswich; this is also adjacent to our allotment.
The very unusual perspective in tandem with attending to plants has already provided a different grounding and enrichment for my work.
